Google Stitch | AI-native canvas turns prompts into UI designs

Google has introduced a major evolution of Stitch, turning the Google Labs experiment into an AI-native software design canvas. Published on March 18, 2026, the update lets creators generate high-fidelity UI from natural language, bring images, text, and code into an infinite canvas, collaborate with a design agent, and move ideas toward prototypes and developer workflows faster.

Google Stitch brings AI-native design directly into the UI canvas


Stitch is moving beyond simple prompt-to-interface generation. Google now describes it as an AI-native software design canvas where ideas can grow from early exploration into high-fidelity UI designs, prototypes, and development-ready outputs.


For web designers and template creators, this is an exciting direction because it connects the creative part of UI exploration with a more structured production flow. Instead of starting only from wireframes, teams can begin with business goals, desired user feelings, visual references, rough concepts, or even code, then use Stitch to turn that context into interface directions.



What changes in the new Stitch canvas


The redesigned Stitch UI introduces an AI-native infinite canvas. Google says the canvas is built to support the natural rhythm of design, where teams diverge, explore several options, compare directions, and converge on a stronger solution after iteration.


Stitch can now accept different types of context directly on the canvas, including images, text, and code. That matters for real web design work because creative briefs are rarely just one clean prompt. A layout direction may come from a screenshot, a brand note, a product requirement, an existing component, or a design system rule.


New workflow options for UI designers and template creators


One of the most important additions is the new design agent, paired with Agent manager. Google says the agent can reason across a project’s evolution and help teams explore multiple ideas in parallel while keeping progress organized.


The DESIGN.md format is also useful for teams that care about consistency. Stitch can extract a design system from a URL or use DESIGN.md as an agent-friendly Markdown file for importing and exporting design rules across tools, which can help avoid rebuilding the same visual direction every time a new project starts.


For template creators, the most practical value is the connection between exploration and reuse. If design rules, UI decisions, and visual standards can travel between projects, it becomes easier to keep landing pages, dashboards, components, and theme systems consistent while still experimenting quickly.


Prototyping, voice, and developer handoff


Google says Stitch can turn static designs into interactive prototypes instantly, allowing users to “Stitch” screens together and preview app flows with a Play button. It can also generate logical next screens after a click, helping teams map user journeys more quickly.


The update also adds voice capabilities, letting users speak directly to the canvas. Google describes examples such as receiving real-time design critiques, asking the agent to design a landing page through an interview, or requesting different menu options and color palettes while staying in the creative flow.


For developer handoff, Stitch connects to broader workflows through its MCP server, SDK, Skills, and export options for tools such as AI Studio and Antigravity. For web teams, that makes Stitch less like a standalone mockup tool and more like a bridge between design exploration, AI collaboration, and implementation.
